Since the early 2000s, Stephen Swindells has collaborated with various artists, notably through the Dutton-Swindells partnership, which has resulted in numerous exhibitions across North America, Asia, and Europe. In 2008, he undertook a three-month residency in Seoul, South Korea, funded by the Arts Council UK. In 2011, the duo was shortlisted for the prestigious Northern Arts Prize. The Barber-Swindells partnership also led to two public art commissions, funded by the Arts Council UK, and resulted in the publication of Mining Couture: a manifesto for common wear (Black Dog Press, 2012).
Between 2012 and 2017, Stephen Swindells focused on writing, research, and advising on cultural leadership and public engagement in the arts. Holding a PhD in artistic practice (2004), he explored the relationship between art and citizenship. In parallel, from 1992 to 2017, he taught fine art practice and history full-time at the universities of Leeds, Sheffield, Open University, and Huddersfield.
Today, Stephen Swindells directs a residency for painters and writers in Burgundy, France.
