Dae Soo KIM

김대수가 오브제로 삼은 대나무는 동양에서 선비의 식물에 속한다. 대나무를 의미하는 한자인 ‘竹’의 형태에서도 보이듯이 대나무는 지조와 절개를 상징하기 때문이다. 작가는 대나무의 줄기와 잎이 구현하는 조형상의 특징에 착안하여 거기에서 동아시아 정신의 한 전형을 포착한다. 그의 사진작업을 통해 동양 정신의 한 핵심이 시각 이미지로 탄생하는 순간이다.
 대나무의 시각적 이미지를 통해 동양정신을 구현하는 과정에서 김대수는 사진 자체의 기술적인 특성을 활용하기도 한다. 그는 특히 음화 상태의 이미지를 그대로 살려, 실제 이미지에서 명암이 반전되는 효과를 얻는다. 이러한 반전기법을 통해 동양사상에서 음과 양의 상호성이 시사되는 한 편, 오브제의 사실성보다는 이미지의 추상성이 극대화되면서 동양의 형이상학이 기하학적 형태로 모습을 드러내기에 이른다. 대나무 줄기의 긴 선과 마디의 짧은 선의 교차에 따른 조형적 구성과 흑백의 계조는 동양의 음양적 세계관과 섬세한 미의식의 한 단면을 보여준다.
 그는 자연물 가운데 특히 대나무의 형태에 초점을 맞춤으로써 대나무의 인간학적 의미뿐만 아니라 동아시아인의 자연관을 시각화한다. 대나무는 단순히 인간과 마주하고 있는 객체가 아니라 인간과 상호소통하고 있는 또 다른 주체이다. 그런 에서 그의 대나무 작품은 서양의 시각이 아니라 동양의 시각에서 읽을 필요가 있다. 일찍이 E. 사이드가 <Orientalism>에서 동양을 서양의 눈으로 평가하는 눈의 오류를 겨냥하여 “동양은 동양이다”라고 주장하면서 동양문화의 독자성을 강조한 사실에 비추어 볼 때, 김대수의 대나무 사진도 대나무에 대한 동아시아 문화권에서의 윤리적 특성을 감안하여 읽을 때 그 의미와 가치가 제대로 평가될 수 있을 것이다.
