“Madonnas” makes us feel the light of bruised and sometimes wounded bodies of women photographed as deities, in theatrical scenography, becoming icons of art and revered women.
The sublimated female nudity sees the day in black and white. The brightness of the radiant epidermis, embellished with benevolent reflections, reveals luminous divinities, whose presence floods us. Under the dark shades of the masked women wrapped in mysterious nights, the poetic melancholy of the presence of death emerges.
Joel-Peter Witkin confronts us with the reality of bodies, with our fears and our immemorial anxieties, with our fragility, our weaknesses and even our own defects.
Prudence, oh, prudence…
Le choix des matériaux, qui induit le contraste de couleurs, de lumières est toujours au centre de l’attention de l’artiste, s’agissant de petites sculptures en céramique ou d’instal- lations en acier plus imposantes.
La structure de l’œuvre est théorisée de manière précise et détaillée en amont. En second lieu, lors de l’élaboration et l’exécution du travail effectif, les matériaux affirment leur intériorité et leur liberté. Ainsi s’établit cette alchimie pratique.
À la texture rugueuse du premier matériau répondent la sensibilité et la délicatesse de l’artiste à travers la surface de l’œuvre.
