Color in the squares

Michel THEIN

05.09 – 24.10.2020

Michel Thein’s works are the antithesis of painting.

Indeed, we get closer to the work of a sculptor by adding and removing-hiding pictorial material. Quanticity plays its role.

The support remains however the frame dressed in raw canvas for the most part, thus defining what he calls a random, open and afocal space.

The confrontation of the work established jointly with the action of time gives this space, random because not defined in advance, open because the subject no longer has precedence, afocal by this arrangement which prevents the gaze from fixing itself.

The square which is placed on the raw canvas accepts the multiple accidents sometimes imperceptible, imperfect human mechanics which supports this contribution, even sometimes desires it.

Small square which dictates its hold, which imprints its colorful will for a zone of vibratory sensitivity.

Finally, simply, of human nature, would small square want to be a monogram?
