Intrinsèque – Christian Fuchs
Christian grew up in Lima, Peru, in the home of his paternal grandparents, surrounded by portraits, objects and documents that had belonged to his family for generations, recounting a journey through different territories. This atmosphere, full of testimonies, stories and lifestyles from other eras, soon led him to wonder who these characters were, who inhabited every corner of his home and who, through the stories told by his grandmother Carmen, remained more alive than many of the people present. Over time, this interest grew deeper and deeper, leading him to carry out more in-depth research, not only into names but also into the personal stories he gathered during his visits to relatives’ homes in southern Chile, Peru, Argentina, Germany and Spain over the years.
His work combines documentary investigation: reading maps, diaries, written information about his ancestors, birth and death certificates, naval registers with photographs, paintings, drawings… and a series of nostalgic family archive images of a time before the present. For the past ten years, Christian Fuchs has been working on his “Transgeneration” series, in which, through the study of his ancestors’ lives, make-up, clothing, characterization and performance are converted into the different men and women of his family tree.s.
