Benjamin Murphy & Nicholas Norris
September 2024, Galerie PJ prepares to open a path to two distinct universes with the exhibition “Aphelion”. Nicholas Norris and Benjamin Murphy are brought together on a journey where distance and proximity merge. Boundaries blur to reveal a shared intimacy.
The Home as the Orbit of Intimacy
For Benjamin and Nicholas, the home reveals itself as an orbit of intimacy. Their art is a powerful reflection of the complexity of inner life. Both explore this theme in complementary ways. They offer a multi-dimensional, personal vision of domestic space.
Nicholas Norris’s colorful paintings evoke a vibrant home full of life. Every object, plant, and motif contributes to a dynamic, energizing atmosphere. These works capture the warmth, familiarity and joie de vivre of everyday life. Vivid colors and detailed compositions create a sense of closeness and comfort. In this way, the home feels like a sanctuary from the outside world. These representations resonate like vignettes of the “perpetual present”, capturing the small joys of everyday life.
In contrast, Benjamin Murphy’s black-and-white works plunge us into the darker scheme of another domestic experience. He reveals the home as a space for reflection and introspection. Benjamin’s frontal use of black and white seems to draw us into places charged with a kind of spleen, from which fears and anxieties emerge in an atmosphere charged with latent sadness. These pieces evoke moments of solitude, of heavy silences that invite the viewer to a quieter, more introspective contemplation. What secrets lurk behind these walls submerged in shadows?
Two perspectives, two dualities confront each other in the gallery space (PF & JS).
