Based in Turin, Nicola de Maria is one of the founding members of the Italian Trans-avant-garde, theorized by Achille Bonito Oliva in 1978, but unlike other representatives of the group, such as Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi and Mimmo Paladino, his work has focused mainly on abstractionism and a pictorial approach in which the limits of the canvas were overcome in order to enter into a relationship with the surrounding space. Known for his playful abstractions painted in consistently vivid and intense primary colors, they tend to be used as a means of striking the viewer’s emotional chord in both small-format works and those covering entire walls. His works have been exhibited at three Venice Biennales (1980-1988-1990), Documenta 7 in Kassel, the 16th São Paulo Biennale, the 4th Sydney Biennale and the Rome Quadriennale (2005-2012).
