Ian Healy

Ian Healy (born in Cork, Ireland, and based in Edinburgh) is a painter whose practice primarily explores the inherent energy of the painted gesture. Trained at the Crawford College of Art & Design, he has developed since the 1990s a body of work focused on the presence of the painted motif—whether a face, an object, or an ambiguous form—rather than on narrative.

Healy seeks the moment when the familiar shifts into the strange, the unsettling, or the humorous. His works, often given pragmatic titles, privilege immediate sensation: colour, light, and the softness or abruptness of the brushstroke create an atmosphere rather than a story. In recent years, he has incorporated his own family into his compositions, finding in this closeness a new sense of authenticity while continuing to draw on art-historical references.
