Zack Rosebrugh (born 1993 in Baltimore, lives and works in Los Angeles) develops a pictorial practice that seeks a precise balance—a form of “rightness” achieved through continuous arrangements, adjustments, and meticulous tinkering. Trained in film at Arizona State University, he draws on his illustration practice to create highly considered compositions: elements sometimes appear as if dragged and dropped onto the surface, while still emphasizing the materiality of the handmade gesture.
Using colored pencil and gouache for works on paper, and oil on canvas for larger formats, Rosebrugh deliberately leaves visible traces of the process—textures, layers of paint, reserved areas, and pentimenti—markers that anchor his images in a physicality absent in digital work. These choices give his often ordinary subjects—a figure, an interior, a piece of furniture, or a fleeting moment—unexpected depth and a subtly charged atmosphere.
His work involves reducing, reordering, and refining these everyday moments until a composition emerges that is both compelling and thoughtfully balanced—much like a French garden, where nature is shaped to reveal its beauty in a new way.
