“Madonnas” makes us feel the light of the bruised and sometimes wounded bodies of women photographed like divinities, in a theatrical scenography, becoming icons of art and venerated women.
Sublimated feminine nudity is born in black and white. The clarity embellished with benevolent reflections of radiant skin reveals luminous divinities, whose presence floods us. Under the dark nuances of masked women wrapped in mysterious nights, the poetic melancholy of the presence of death is drawn in filigree.
Joël-Peter Witkin confronts us with the reality of bodies, our immemorial fears and anxieties, our fragilities, our weaknesses and even our own faults.
