About the Exhibition

Born in 1985, Kim Deokho studied ceramic arts at Seoul National University, where he later earned a Master of Fine Arts specializing in craft and design. His education placed him at the intersection of traditional Korean craftsmanship and contemporary design discourse—a tension that would become the guiding thread of his practice.

Through his exploration of the concept of the “thinking hand,” Kim Deokho came to recognize the limitations of purely explicit knowledge, grounded in theory and intellectual understanding. In his view, an understanding of materials cannot be theorized in advance; it must be acquired through repetition, over thousands of hours of practice devoted to patient, attentive work. This conviction led him to explore in depth the Yeon-li technique, rooted in Korean ceramic tradition, which involves combining and layering clays of different colours before shaping the piece. Once the form has been thrown on the wheel, cut into precise vertical facets, and polished, each plane of the surface reveals a different expression of the clay: variations in depth, subtle shifts in tone, and the internal memory of a material in motion. Nothing is added. Everything is revealed through the removal of material.

This process forms the foundation of his Vestige series: works whose surfaces also serve as records, bearing witness to the properties of clay, the rotation of the wheel, and the decisions made—and sometimes abandoned—during the shaping process. The series has been exhibited internationally, notably at PAD London, Design Miami, and in Dubai. The artist’s works are also held in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Seoul Museum of Modern Art, and the Korea Heritage Service. In 2024, Kim Deokho received the GCB Award at the international competition of the Gyeonggi Ceramics Biennale.
